MEET DJ/Producer ESP

By: Lil Nightlife

So to be honest I don’t really know how I met ESP cause I seen him in passing a couple of times. Life is like that in Miami Nightlife. You may see someone at parties a bunch of times. But when we did link up it’s been like magic. He’s a Visionary and is not afraid to march to the beat of his own drum like me. He’s a graduate of Florida State. Go Noles!

“Music is the key to the soul,” says Miami-based DJ E.S.P. For a decade now he’s been the thru the cutthroat Nightlife scene delivering you dope music to move and groove you. You may have seen him everywhere from E11Even to Basement as well Las Rosa there’s no venue he’s afraid to bring his brand of musical splendor. Now we dive in to Ten Questions:

Lil Nightlife: Who are you and what do you do?

EPS: My government name is Sam Plessett, though most know me through my music aliases ‘ES.P’, E.S.P, and ‘bb sp’. I’m a Producer, DJ, engineer, and arranger— though not always necessarily in that order.

Lil Nightlife: If you weren’t a Producer what would you be doing in life?

EPS: If I wasn’t an artist myself, I would still be directly involved with nightlife and the music industry somehow. Whether I was more on the marketing and promotional end, or even as a booking agent, artist manager. These are areas I already dabble in, but I imagine I could do them as my main focus as well. Lil Nightlife: On a scale of one to ten, how weird are you? EPS: On a scale on 1-10 on the “weird scale,” I would probably call myself a 6 or 7 on the surface, though I’m probably closer to an 8 or 9 deep down. I like to to keep things balanced so I’m not always channeling my weird tendencies.

Lil Nightlife: Tell me what Art is to you and do you think Miami is producing great works of it or shitty wannabe art?

EPS: Art is just being creative in, any way possible. Anything could be art as long as the intention is there, whether consciously or not. Lil Nightlife: What's the craziest moment in your career thus far and how did you deal with it?

EPS: I’ve had many crazy moments and milestones throughout my career. From having my edits being played at festivals by Diplo back in my early days, to spinning Miami’s first Boiler Room, to having my music synced on an HBO show. There’s been many special moments that I’m just trying to continue to build upon. Lil Nightlife: Do you think most Artists suffer some sort of Trauma and thus that’s why they create? Do you suffer?

EPS: I used to believe in the myth of suffering artist but now I recognize that its just a cliche, and not necessary. Of course we all suffer in some way or another from time to time, but I don’t think its pertinent to make art. To make art you have to do just that— make art. For further insight, I refer to a TedTalk by writer Elizabeth Gilbert, who explains this concept more eloquently than I ever could. Lil Nightlife: Boxers or Briefs or Commando at Gigs?

EPS: Usually briefs at gigs! I’ve got one or two pairs of boxer that may occasionally be rocked. Lil Nightlife: What Music Genre are you inspired most by?

EPS: My inspiration, genre-wise, is always changing. Every year I discover and then become obsessed with a new bourgeoning genre. Learning to separate that from my own production and DJ sets is where it can get tricky. Im currently highly inspired by contemporary indie RnB, Synth funk, Indie Rock/dance, as well as dance genres like UK Garage and 2 Step influences. Artists I’m constantly bumping lately: Kali Uchis, Jorja Smith, Janelle Monae, Jungle, Toro y Moi, The Internet and more. Lil Nightlife: Drake vs Kanye West? Whose team would you be on?

EPS: Team Dreezy… Drake + Yeezy!

Lil Nightlife: Explain Future Projects for EsP!

EPS: Keep on the look out for my ‘BB SP’ project. First EP dropping in 2019!

And there you have it Ladies and Gentlemen a wonderful interview with a wonderful man. For my Ladies if you enjoy a dj in briefs hopefully you catch him on the right day. Definitely be on the lookout for his upcoming EP as well catch him spinning around various Nightspots in Miami. Also you can follow him on Instagram @esdotp as well me @lilnightlife .
